Synopsis
On our third wedding anniversary, I walked into a room filled with cheers—only to find my husband on one knee, proposing to his childhood sweetheart.
“Say yes! Say yes!” our friends chanted excitedly.
The moment they noticed me standing in the doorway, the noise faltered. An awkward silence fell over the room—brief, sharp. Then someone forced a laugh.
“We’re just kidding! It’s just a game!”
Chairs scraped against the floor as everyone hurried out, leaving the three of us—then just the two of us—alone.
I looked at my husband and said calmly, “I want a divorce.”
He frowned immediately, irritation flashing across his face. “Come on. We were playing Truth or Dare. You’re seriously going to act like this over a game?”
I rested my hand gently over my slightly rounded belly. I had imagined telling him about the baby tonight. I had imagined surprise, joy—maybe even tears.
Instead, all I felt was a quiet, hollow disappointment.
I nodded. “Yes,” I said softly. “Just because of the game.”
