Synopsis
My best friend and I had been infamous little terrors at St. Helena’s Orphanage for as long as we could remember.
I had a razor-sharp tongue that could reduce anyone to tears, and she preferred to let her fists do the persuading. Between the two of us, no one dared cross the line. Even the guard dog would tuck its tail and slink along the wall when we passed.
When we were eight, we were squatting in the dirt, poking at an anthill with a stick, when the director walked into the yard with a well-dressed, wealthy couple.
They claimed my best friend was the long-lost daughter of the Reed family and had come to take her home.
Without a second’s hesitation, she grabbed my hand and declared that if she was leaving, I was going with her.
