Synopsis
I was said to be favored by the goddess of fortune. As long as I stayed in my office and slept the day away, the family business thrived. Deals closed effortlessly. Profits soared. Money flowed in without pause.
Mario, our longtime consigliere, treated me like a living good-luck charm. The mere thought of me leaving made him nervous. He even had a ten-foot massage bed installed in my office so I could nap in comfort, convinced my presence alone kept the empire standing.
But today, everything changed.
Mario had been reassigned to oversee a few struggling betting shops in Brooklyn. In his place, a woman walked in—confident, cold, and unapologetic. Her stilettos struck the floor with sharp, deliberate clicks as she crossed the room.
Without a word, she picked up the freshly brewed espresso on my desk—and poured it straight over my brand-new silk blouse.
