Synopsis
Valentine’s Day. I’m behind the counter at City Hall when my fiancé walks in—hand in hand with his so-called girl best friend—to get married.
He drops his ID on my desk like it’s nothing. “Relax, Nina. I lost a bet. I have to marry Sophia for a day. We’ll file for divorce tomorrow. No big deal.”
Sophia, drowning in his oversized white shirt, flashes me a smug smile. “You’re not going to block us, right? Nina’s always been weirdly jealous about me anyway.”
Before she can finish, I slam my stamp down on the counter. “Of course not. I totally get it. Just best friends doing best friend things. Go take your adorable wedding photos. Happy honeymoon!”
His expression darkens instantly, and they storm out of City Hall.
The very next day, the same pair shows up again—this time for a divorce. I notice the fresh hickeys blooming along his neck and can’t help but smile as I slide a form across the desk.
“Oops. New policy,” I say sweetly. “Impulsive couples have to complete a six-month cooling-off period before filing for divorce.”
I tap the paper lightly. “You want that divorce? See you in six months, lovebirds.”
