Green Chrysanthemums, Too Late, I’m Gone

Synopsis

When the fire broke out, my boyfriend didn’t hesitate. He ran straight past me and carried his childhood neighbor, Chloe Sinclair, out of the flames.

Later, his friend tried to reassure me. “James just felt responsible. He’s known Chloe for more than ten years. If there were feelings between them, something would’ve happened by now.”

I listened without raising my voice. “I don’t understand it,” I said evenly, “but I respect it. Whatever is between them is their business. You should keep your opinions to yourself.”

Three days after the fire, I moved into my new apartment on Willow Lane. When I arrived, a bouquet of white roses waited at my door— the first time he had ever sent me flowers like that.
