Afraid the student he’d been sponsoring wouldn’t be able to afford train tickets, Ethan gave up his acceptance to Westbrook University and switched his application to the local Riverside City College instead.
By the time I found out, there were only two hours left before the deadline.
My best friend Zoe spoke softly, carefully. “Lila, there’s still time. You can change your application too.”
I stared at the photo of Ethan and me glowing on my screen. For a long moment, I said nothing. Then I slowly shook my head, a quiet bitterness rising in my chest.
“No,” I said. “I’m not changing it.”
