Synopsis
The call came from my teacher, her voice bright with pride. “Congratulations. You earned the highest score in the city.”
Beside me, my mom covered her mouth, tears shining in her eyes. My final score was 682. I refreshed the page three times, heart pounding, afraid it would change—but it didn’t. I had done it.
A week later, St. George’s Academy released the admissions list for its prestigious honors program. Only forty students would be accepted. I opened the list, scanning carefully from the very top.
My name wasn’t there.
Instead, another name claimed the number one spot.
