Synopsis
On the way home from visiting a postnatal care center, Ethan Wilson received a call from his late best friend’s pregnant widow. Her voice trembled through the speaker. “Ethan, I’m almost due, and I still can’t find a reliable postpartum center. What am I supposed to do?”
That was all it took for me to understand—the center I had carefully chosen was no longer mine.
As soon as he ended the call, Ethan spoke softly, almost guiltily. “Winnie, maybe that place wasn’t so great after all. Why don’t we just let my mom take care of you after the baby’s born?”
I simply nodded.
He stared at me, stunned. “You’re agreeing? I thought you’d fight Luna for it.”
My phone buzzed with a new message. I glanced at it, then looked up with a faint, steady smile. “I won’t argue anymore. Not ever again.”
I had spent years fighting for what should have been mine, swallowing every disappointment and compromise. But I refused to let my child grow up watching me beg for scraps of consideration.
The postpartum center could go.
And if it came to it, so could Ethan.
